All About Bees

Thursday, September 21st, 2006

Here are some facinating facts about Bees for you….( we have learned a lot about Bees today )

You see, Malena drinks an energy drink that contains Bee Propolis and she was convinced that Propolis is Bee Poo. I might have been nearly asleep in a much needed nap, but as this was CLEARLY important to her, I woke up and hopped on the internet.

Turns out she was right, we found out , those wacky bees! And honey is bee vomit. And bees have two stomachs. Malena has aksed me to tell everyone it is now Bee ProPOOlis. I could go on about bees, but now you have the highights.

If anyone wonders WHY I am sharing these Bee Facts here on our music blog, I made a deal with her that if I got up and did a Blog I could then go back to sleep, not mind you that she has stopped talking this entire time, I am not sure what she is talking on now, nor how she got there, but I have done my part with the bee blog, and can now go to sleep. Notice I have even included some Bee Images.

Oh, LA is wonderful.

To be continued…..

Remembering Music

Sunday, September 17th, 2006

Malena says that Blogs should have pictures, and I don’t have much in the way of pics on my laptop here at my House, where I have finally arrived, alive, after my long long long weekend, so I went on the web and found this from long ago, 1993 I think it was. Me and my bandmate Emma Bull, from our first Flash Girls publicity shot ever. Note the Death T-shirt….

It’s odd too, as today at the Fest I was walking by a music act and heard them doing ” The All Purpose Folk Song ” a song my Boss wrote for us to play out there, I didn’t know they were doing it, but it’s of course fine with me. They also do Girl Needs a Knife and Race to the Moon, which they had asked if I minded. No not at all, cover away folks!

( I said, ” It’ like having my own Flash Girls Tribute Band ” ! )

It’s even odder that when I called Boss tonight to check in he told me, without me saying anything on the subject, that he wanted to re-write the All Purpose Folk Song.

I think I have Emma on my mind today. And Malena.

I wonder too, how I got so fortunate to have been able to work with such two brilliant, compleling, wonderful amazing women, as Emma and Malena. ( Who both also happen to be tall, beautiful, thin with long dark thick ( yes, there is envy here ) hair.)

To take it further, how did I get so favored to have work with so very many magic people? Time Mallys, Bedlam, St Domminics, Folk Underground and Lojo Russo so on and so and…

Ok, enough rambling on, I am back, survived and more or less here. No brain, no energy, but I had a great weekend. I do so very much love playing for so many people. There are too many wonderful moments to talk about but I am truly grateful for the chance to sing and play for you. All of you. Every gig , all the time.

If you loved what I did this weekend, or ever , any gig, any band, and you know who you are, know that you gave me as much as I gave you.

I am the lucky one.

And I thank you.

Off to Malena tomorrow…..

All my love, Lorraine

Malena HERE!

Yes, it is my policy to have photos for blog entries. Poor Fablo. We spoke tonight and I was going a million miles an hour. Every few minutes, Lorraine would say,
“Ah! Div, I would be happy to advise you on that subject, BUT NOT RIGHT NOW!”
You see, I AM very shy..unless I like you or already know you. Then……oh honey, it’s a one woman show gone wrong!! Out bursts this talkative creature. (For those who have seen us on stage, this is not new info..especially Convergence.) Can’t WAIT to get that CD back. Dear God we were wild. Lorraine LEFT the stage a few times I was so , well animated. That’s a nicer word than NASTY. Yes?

Yeah. She always THINKS going to Hollywierd is for R&R, but I have other plans for our little rainbow bright. I told her she’d better bring her sassy pants. (rhinestone studded jeans) We’re goin’ clubbin baby! Yes! The kind where strange women and men (sometimes a collage of both) dance in glass cages, Drag Queens do runway shows, and you buy drinks with sexy names. To bad neither of us drink. Oh Funny story! I was at dinner the other day with Miles and some industry friends. Everyone was drinking but me. Someone said, “oh oh who’s gonna drive home?” I said, “ME Dork!” and HERE’S THE PRICELESS MOMENT…
He said, “Malena, YOU are NOT sober enough to drive!”
Miles gently reminded him that I act like a complete ham without any alcohol at all. None what so ever.

So, I’ve got some really cool things planned, including WORK. Hee hee. Can’t forget about that. I’ve been singing all these old songs recently. They make me cry.
Sexy songs like Deep Purple, Stardust, Stormy Weather, Skylark, Send in the Clowns, There’s always One…etc. I LOVE to sing. It is the best expression of my soul. My emotions flow out of my voice and the lyrics becoming a story I remember. As if the song was a part of my life, for a moment. That’s one way to describe how I love music. Especially dark, tormented, romantic stuff. (Guess Fablo chose the right writer for that, huh?)

My daughter and I went to Universal Studios today. My friend Kristen’s movie was playing there, CROSSOVER. Today was “be a kid” day for Malena. They have this Nickelodeon water park that is FABULOUS.
500 gallons of water gushing over your head all at once. (Although I must mention NEXT time I go, I won’t wear a WHITE rhinestone skull tshirt and hippie jeans.) I proudly, was one of 2 parents that chose to get in on the aqua action. I won HUGE brownie points with my Bean for doing this. So, I’m totally drenched, as in my pants are heavy and I squeak as I walk and my hair’s all ratty and dripping….and I decide to go say hello to the Dark Horse Comic Shop. I was having so much fun I forgot I was dripping. I wrangled one of the sales dudes over and said,
“Excuse me! Where’s the Neil Gaiman section?” (I like to take photos for Fablo when I go places) He sadly replied, “Mr. Gaiman’s work sells so fast, it’s hard to keep the wall stocked.” I just smiled and said, “Yeah. That figures. I’m a BIG fan! I understand these things.” As I turned around to leave, I noticed a TRAIL of water following me around the store! No wonder why the guys were looking at me funny. Fablo MUST go to Universal and get soaked. It REALLY isn’t just for kids! So between shopping, singing, clubbing and waterparking, I’m SURE she’ll get all the rest she needs. Wehooooooooooo come on down baby! She gets in really late. I should just take her straight downtown. (She WOULD kill me…and possibly cry out of desperation for sleep!) We’ve been talking about doing webcam parties, or PODcasts, for all you tech savvy people. I don’t even know how to pull a podcast off and I’m a web geek for certain. So, she will teach me to podcast and I will sing and dress her up in outfits she would NEVER wear.

Sounds fun, ah?
You’ll see..very very soon!
Love you LaMies!
Malena

And no, saldy..that is not my bum in the photo. I just like it because of the Violin.
That’s LaM’s instrument right there. Oh.. the sound of a forlorn woman playing the violin. Very Moving.

The Week I FInally Lost My Mind…( what was left of it )

Madness, pure madness. That, my dearlings, would be my life right now.

Last weekend went pretty much how I had thought , with some interesting twists. Did the show Saturday day shows, froze most of the day. I forget , here in the frozen tundra, fall comes when it comes and when it comes, IT IS HERE. One day, summer, next day, FALL. I mean cold, and leaves and colour, the whole bit.

Fall came Saturday. Didn’t know that Saturday morning. Dressed for summer. Did show. Froze at show.

Left the show, wearing all that I possesed and drove three hours NORTH, to a wedding. Set up, played after dark, outdoors , until midnight, with the Tim Malloys. Nice wedding, nice people, like weddings, like the money. Very. Very. Cold. Big Sexy brought along his leather duster, which goes to the ground on him, now he is a big man and a little over 6 feet. He is also like unto a God, for he leant me the duster in between sets.

May have actually saved my life.

Somewhere in that madness I begin to suspect I am becoming ill, like some sort of evil cold virius in my throat.

One the way home I am sure of it. Now , home , for the evening, as we will be arriving around 5 AM and my first show is 10 AM , is the floor, ( which we have thoughtfully made up ahead of time,) of Big Sexy’s tent, out at the fest.

I add the Duster to the blankets on the floor, sleep for four hours and awake SICK like a dog. Chest and throat. I start to go up to do the show, and realize it is RAINING. Not a good sign. No violins in the rain. Sing? Oh, Gods….

Go home , where I will spend the next 2 and a half days in bed. Then back to work, all seems well now, my evil virus has most thoughtfully moved into my ears, where it will no doubt lodge happily thru my next set of shows.

Which start Friday night, at Charlies, the Fest on Saturday, then Charlies, again with Paul Saturday night , then Fest on Sunday.

Monday? I send my Boss off to the UK on his next tours and then get on a plane to LA.

Here are some nice before and after pictures of me for you……..

Gods, I love rock-n-roll.

Pre- Halloween Happiness

Monday, September 11th, 2006

(Yes, those ARE my new vampire teeth.) I already bragged about them on myspace, so I’ll save you the rant. BTW, The Demon Hunter’s Handbook, Illustrated by MY Mr. Gorgeous is available at Barnes and Noble.

This town is buzzing with whispers of secret Halloween parties and events. Halloween is a comin’ LaMies. It’s my favorite time of the year, especially with all the FX parties. Finally I will be able to wear some of my REAL Malena outfits. Fablo will be out here soon. Shhh! I’m taken’ her out baby! I won’t take no for an answer.

Because I am getting into the Halloween spirit, I will be sending out a FEW LaMie gift baskets, not jut one. I was looking through my gift drawer the other day and said to myself, “It’s LaMie gift time”
In a week or so, I’ll announce this month’s winners.

We have some LaMie babies to show off! Mistress Mousey’s “Alistair crawly” sent us a darling photo. LOOK AT THE baby! Cuteness!
AND…. Miles friend, Gino Acevedo and his partner Liz had a baby girl the other day. She’ll be the youngest person at Weta. Congratulations! Miles cousin also had a baby girl. I’ve got some baby shopping to do. Oh honey! Twist my arm…. Man it is baby season! I’m the Fairy God Mother around here. All my daughter’s friends call me that, and the young girls I read for..that I adopt. Someone is always coming to borrow a gown or shoes or jewels. The young lil’ Divas always look better in my clothes than I do. AH!
My sister always says, “Thank God you didn’t have a boy! You’d make him into a drag queen in less than a year.” DAMN STRAIGHT I would. Where do you think I learned how to put on liquid eyeliner so well? The Queens of NYC baby! Beads, makeup, showtunes, guys that don’t want to have sex with you….What’s not to love?

BTW, Happy Birthday sister dear!

I’ll keep you posted on the parties and the trinkets.

XOXO

Strange and unknown edibles

Wednesday, September 6th, 2006

I went to the Farmer’s Market today. Found some VERY strange veggies. Since I’ve been on that *no…. bread, rice, pasta, caffeine, chocolate, alcohol, wheat, corn, sugar* diet for the last year, I’ve been finding new things to eat. Can anyone tell me what that alien football thing is? It’s some asian veggie I think. Hmmm. We’ll see.

After walking around all those booths, I started thinking…WE ARE SOOOOOO LUCKY. How often do we stop and think about how good we really have it? Almost never. Our lives are so pressured we forget about how much peace we really have. We still have water to drink, and if we save it, and not waste, it could last longer than projected.
People all over the world are being bombed to bits.
Women are getting raped every day by extremists.
Kids are being bombed to death, and here we sit in our malls and our posh SUV’s. Talking about what to wear to the next big party. I am just as guilty as anyone else. But I constantly think about what I can do to make things better. What can we do? All I can think of right now is STAY OPEN MINDED and READ all you can. Don’t take anything for face value. ESPECIALLY the news! AND….stop eating stuff out of boxes. What does that have to do with the state of the world, you ask? Well, if you’re not healthy and quick witted, certain people can take advantage of you. I always tell my daughter, “No one can take advantage of you if you’re smarter than they are!”

Did you know Cheese-its are one molecule away from PLASTIC? We have to be strong, we have to be powerful in order to survive what is coming. And if you ask me what I think is killing Americans? IT’S OUR FOOD! We all eat like crap. We put tons of creams on our skin hoping it will flush away the wrinkles. Well, how about feed your cells from the inside? Since I met Miles, he has (lovingly) pushed me to eat better and take better care of myself. Because of him, I feel better than I did 10 years ago. Being AWARE of what’s really going on in the world is the first step in changing it.
Ok, that’s my rant of the evening.

Introducing Zombie Girl

Tuesday, September 5th, 2006

Hey. I’m here. Survived. I think. Wow. Intense weekend.

I am a zombie today, so this will not be long or witty. Ok, the shows.

Saturday night was wonderful. Friday was ok, Saturday the Fest was rained on all afternoon, but Saturday night was magic, the pub was packed and they were there to hear music, I loved them all so much! Except for the ” hey mad can I play your guitar” drunk guy at the end of the night everyone was so supportive and wonderful, I was pretty tired and hurting but their energy got me thru.

Sunday was rain all day. No violin. I had to sing the whole shows. Not used to that.

Monday. Another day of shows. Only nine more. DID re-consider coffee. Went to caribou and the teas were all ” a relaxing soothing blend ” sort of tea. As opposed to Starbucks where they have tea helpfully labeled AWAKE. But the caribou folks were so nice and let me taste the coffees and I went out with a cup, cream and sugar, and YE GADS! I get it now! Wow! Wake the heck up! I liked it so much I stopped at another caribou 40 miles down the road and had another.

( it’s weird, the people at caribou are so sweet and nice and they act like they are really truly happy and have made their day that you stopped in and Starbucks they act like WHAT the heck do you want, fine, ok, you can have a drink, now leave me alone, we have much better things to do )

( and yes, I truly would support my local coffee shop, but there aren’t any here or off the highway that I know of, don’t bash me for going to the big guys, I am in dire straights )

Spoke to Malena on and off all weekend, which was lovely. And she left me many messages of encouragement. My clock out at the Fest is my cell phone which I have to have on vibrate, of course. I stick it down my bodice for easy access. Call me.

Call me often.
